Really Helps!
My mom used this on us as kids when I lived on a farm and got small boo-boos on a regular basis - even stepping on nails. Many that would send us to the emergency room today! This merthiolate helps with SO many small wounds! I tried the Merthiolate "colorless" and it didn't work at all! This is an orange color and can stain, but it really, really works. I have even used it on my inner lip when I bite it and it gets really sore. A dab of this helps those heal in just a few days when they normally would take over a week or more. I just put a tiny bit on a Q-Tip, dab it on the wound, then spit it out in the sink. So I'm not swallowing it or anything and it has never hurt me at all. Stings a little, tiny bit, but not nearly as much as Iodine does!

A Benzalkonium Chloride Solution Intended to Replace the Original Merthiolate
Contrary to the Product Description, this is not the original merthiolate, and is not an organomercury compound. Originally, Merthiolate was the trade name for thimerosal, Eli Lilly’s mercury-based antiseptic. Although manufactured by Lilly, it was occasionally sold under other labels. In the late 1990s, the FDA banned over the counter sale of products containing thimerosal. The term “merthiolate” is now applied to benzalkonium chloride, not only by Sanvall, but also others, including Walmart and at least one HMO (Kaiser Permanente). (Benzalkonium chloride is also the active ingredient in some current so-called “mercurochrome” solutions, intended to replace the original mercury-based mercurochrome.) Although not based on mercury, benzalkonium chloride, like thimerosal, can be toxic in certain concentrations and applications.Sanvall’s “merthiolate” differs from original merthiolate in several respects. Like original merthiolate, Sanvall’s “merthiolate” comes in a solution, roughly 99% of which is composed of inactive ingredients. The Lilly and Sanvall versions both contain alcohol, but Lilly’s original mixture apparently had a much greater proportion of alcohol; this made it sting when applied to an open wound. On the other hand, Sanvall’s “merthiolate” solution seems to have a higher proportion of water, so it does not sting an open wound, and it does not dry as quickly as original merthiolate. Sanvall has added red number 22 to its product—but this yields a pale pink color, in contrast to the deep orange color of the original. (Sanvall also offers a colorless version.)Like thimerosal, benzalkonium chloride is an effective antiseptic and fungicidal treatment. But my experience suggests that it is not as effective as the original. Benzalkonium chloride has long been in use in Bactine and such products as antiseptic towelettes, mouthwash, and nasal spray. Sanvall’s “merthiolate” comes in a small bottle; it is easy to administer with the applicator brush built into the bottle cap.

merthiolate first aid
The shipment was prompt, the medicine seems of good quality. However, the applicator brush could have been a siphon applicator instead. Otherwise, a perfect product. Thanks.
