The main functions of Mai Ya in TCM are to eliminate retention of food, harmonize the stomach, to restrain lactation in women or to promote the flow of liver Qi. Barley sprouts are also used to treat stagnant liver and stomach Qi conditions with symptoms such as distention, fullness in the chest and epigastric pain. Mai Ya is also used in Chinese herb to help stop lactation and ease the pain associated with distended breasts. Barley sprouts can be applied to the skin to treat burns and wounds. For starch food stagnation, Mai Ya is combined with Shan Zha, Shen Qu and Ji Nei Jin. In TCM, Mai Ya is considered sweet and neutral and to enter through the Spleen, Stomach and Liver meridians.
