Q: can i copy copy proitected cable channels with the video stabilizer

Encrypted (or copy protected or scrambled) cable channels are _digitally_ encrypted. This (and all adapters like it) _only_ work with _analog_ encryption techniques (and then only the ones they specify so read up before buying).

Q: The one I got is grey, not white like in the photos. Does the color of it matter at all?

Mine is grey too but it's the stuff inside that makes it work and mine works fine. I have converted about 30 kids vhs to DVD and all work fine 

Q: Didn't work to transfer a copyrighted movie to dvd. Movie would go black and sound would stop. Why?

Sounds like it is defective. Mine works fine. My unit also handles streaming signals. It's great!
