Eccentric French author Marcel Proust is remembered by Celeste Albaret, the woman who spent nine years of her youth attending to his practical and his neurotic needs.

Beautiful film of a very different era
Exquisite acting which conveys more than words. Beautiful story of the life of a remarkable artist and his limitation, needs met through the devotion of a devoted woman. Wonderfully directed.

If Vermeer had been a film-maker.......
Another five-star review. This film is based closely on the memoir by Celeste Albaret of her time working for Proust. The book is extremely moving, and so is the film. It is visually marvellous, even though almost all the action is confined to one apartment. (There are a few shots of her home village.) If Vermeer had been a film-maker, this is probably what would have resulted: a sense of quiet, of dignity, with nothing overstated because Adlon clearly trusts his audience. The acting, is superb. What amazes me is that there is STILL no DVD of this film. I have a home-made DVD taken from a rather worn print, and I can only imagine how much better the film wold look if transferred properly.I should be sending anonymous, threatening letters to whoever is responsible for this oversight. Luckily for them, I don't know who they are, so can only address this respectful plea. Even someone who knew nothing about Proust would, I think, react as I do to the film. Proustians - all of them - really ought to take a little time off re-reading the Master in order to see this homage to two quite astonishing people.

Superbly Acted Account of a Relationship With a Great Writer
One of those rare films that draws you in solely with the outstanding representation of two characters who couldn't outwardly be more different but share a bond that is unique. It's acting at its highest. It also helps to know a little about Marcel Proust, but not essential.

Masterpiece! . Ignore bad reviews.
This is a cinematic masterpiece which pays homage to Proust and the woman without whom his work would have been Lost to Time.

Beautiful masterpiece
One needs to appreciate the slower paced early 19th century period film. It is beautifully done.

a beautiful, compelling film.
The camera speaks!

Excruciatingly slow.
It's amazing how the film condenses the last eight years of Proust's life into a movie that goes on...forever. All the art of a dying Proust couldn't redeem the Time Lost on this.

Not in English
No matter what Amazon claims this is a foreign movie. German, I think.

Peccato perché solo in lingua tedesca.
