Q: Will this work for tinting epoxy a cherry color?

NO!!! The stain is a water based product and will not mix with epoxy. Don't try to use oil based stain either. Two things you can try: mix sanding dust from the wood if available to the epoxy, or use dry rare-earth powders colors. Do a lot of pretesting!!!!

Q: Is the orange stain a light or dark orange?

I’ve not used the Orange stain, but these are transparent stains so if you’re applying to a light wood and the first coat is not as dark as you’d like, just add another coat.

Q: What’s the best way to thin this down so the color is a lighter shade of orange?

Depending on how much less color you looking for you have two options: 1. Get General Finishes (GF) Water Based Dye Stain Reducer and dilute the wood dye. 2. You could experiment with toning rather than dye-staining. Instead of using the orange wood dye and then finishing with a clear topcoat like General Finishes High Performance you could try the following: Apply NO wood dye. Get General Finishes (GF) High Performance Clear water based finish and add to 10% by volume of the (GF) orange wood dye to the clear finish. This is called “toning” the finish. Apply the toned clear finish. Your coloring will be a subtle tint in the clear finish rather than the strong color of the wood dye.

Q: Applied dye stain to maple and it's a lighter color compared to on-screen one. Will adding more coats get me closer to the sample color?

Additional coats will darken the finish. Best to work out the results you want on a test piece of wood first. You also have to take into account your topcoats. You probably want to seal your dye with a coat of shellac and then your choice of a top coat. Shellac will probably add a slight amber tone unless you are using super blonde. An oil based top coat will also darken your finish slightly and a waterbased one would probably be crystal clear.
