For me I use it in salt water, I did not clean it but I make sure it is not tied because it will use a rope design using a wide rope. Do not leave it in a sunny place

Q: Can this stay in the water stationary throughout the summer?

According to my experience with this type of material, the sun will consume it if it is hot. But I did not try this and when I do not use it I store it in a place away from the sun and the desert

Q: what is the surface like....will it chaff or scratch your skin?

I was surprised at how durable the surface is. I have seen some cheaper models so I wanted to go with something a little thicker. Surface is smooth will not scratch the skin. . We have only had it a few days and used it a couple of times, but the kids love it. Due to the thickness it will support a lot more weight than other water pads. Hope that helps.

Very durable. Ours hasn't ripped at all. Curly when you first unroll it but it you leave it out in the water it lies flat.
